- The exam is one 2.5-hour session: four written essay responses chosen from five scenario prompts.
- The Legal and ethical issues response is mandatory and must be passed separately at 75% or higher.
- Responses are scored 0-4 by independent judges; overall passing requires at least 75%.
- Prerequisites include current CJE status, JEA membership and five years of teaching or advising experience.
What This Cheat Sheet Covers
This page condenses the facts that matter most for the Master Journalism Educator (MJE) credential, the advanced professional certification offered by the Journalism Education Association (JEA). It is designed to be skimmed the night before you plan your application, or pinned beside your desk while you build a study schedule. Where the issuer's own pages disagree with each other, this sheet says so instead of picking a winner quietly.
If you are brand new to the credential, start with What Is MJE? for background, then return here for the compressed version. For the long-form preparation plan, the companion MJE Study Guide 2026 goes deeper than a one-page review can.
Credential Snapshot
| Item | Fact |
|---|---|
| Full name | Master Journalism Educator (MJE) |
| Administering body | Journalism Education Association (JEA), Certification Committee |
| Relationship to CJE | Current Certified Journalism Educator (CJE) status is a prerequisite |
| Exam style | Written essay responses to advising scenarios |
| Separate requirement | Preapproved professional project plus online cohort participation |
| Validity | Five years while JEA membership stays active |
| Expiration | December 31 at the end of the term |
The credential is built around professional judgment rather than recall. The stated purpose of the exam is to have candidates apply journalism knowledge and experience to advising situations, supporting each answer with specific reasoning. That single sentence explains why conventional multiple-choice banks are a poor match: they do not reproduce the official response format. For a fuller explanation of what the credential represents, see What Is MJE Certification?
Exam Format at a Glance
- Prompts offered: five scenario prompts.
- Responses required: four written essays.
- Mandatory response: Legal and ethical issues.
- Time: one 2.5-hour session.
- Delivery: on-site (bring your own internet-capable laptop) or virtual with proctoring; virtual testing must be finished in one sitting within the assigned window.
- Scoring: anonymized responses, holistically scored by independent judges.
Note the arithmetic: because you answer four of five prompts and the law-and-ethics response is compulsory, you effectively choose three more from the remaining four. The unused prompt is simply a choice, not a hidden unscored or pretest item. Candidates with a real weak area can plan to skip it, but only if they are confident across the other four.

The Five Scenario Areas
JEA publishes five areas for the MJE examination. No percentage weights are published, so do not assume equal 20% shares or any other split. Treat each area as fair game and prepare your reasoning style for all of them. The detailed breakdown lives in MJE Exam Domains 2026; here is the quick version.
Domain 1: Content, writing and editing
Scenarios about the quality and direction of student-produced content.
- Be ready to justify editorial coaching decisions with specific, concrete reasoning.
- Show how you would develop writing standards and an editing process with student staffers.
Domain 2: Graphics, design and production
Advising situations involving visual communication and getting a publication or broadcast made.
- Explain production workflow decisions and how you mentor students through them.
- Tie design choices to audience and purpose rather than personal taste.
Domain 3: Staff and administration relationships
Situations involving student leadership, staff dynamics and communication with school administrators.
- Demonstrate how you manage conflict while protecting the learning mission of the program.
- Cite concrete steps, not general statements about "communication."
Domain 4: Business and advertising
Scenarios covering the financial and advertising side of student media.
- Discuss budgeting, revenue and advertising decisions with specifics from your own experience.
- Connect business choices to editorial independence.
Domain 5: Legal and ethical issues
The compulsory response, and the one with its own pass line.
- Background preparation topics include Tinker, Fraser, Hazelwood, Morse, Yeo and Dean, alongside copyright, privacy, censorship, prior review, access and ethics.
- Check current, jurisdiction-specific sources before relying on any legal point.
One caution: the law and ethics preparation presentation JEA hosts is labeled for CJE and is not an MJE blueprint. Use it as background, not as an exhaustive objective list.
Scoring Rules That Decide Pass or Fail
Each response is scored on a 0-4 scale, and fractional scores are permitted. Judges look at essential content, supporting detail, clarity and organization, and errors.
| Score | Label |
|---|---|
| 0 | Irrelevant |
| 1 | Unsatisfactory |
| 2 | Minimum Competency |
| 3 | Good |
| 4 | Excellent |
Two thresholds must both be met:
- At least 75% overall.
- At least 75% on the Legal and ethical issues response, separately.
Key Takeaway
A strong average cannot rescue a weak law-and-ethics essay. Because that response has its own 75% pass line, give it the most rehearsal time and write at least one full practice answer to a student-press scenario before anything else. Note that 75% on a 0-4 scale corresponds to a 3.0 average.
Scored answers are not returned. Unsuccessful candidates instead receive an analysis of their unsatisfactory responses. Results timing is stated inconsistently: six to eight weeks on the MJE Test FAQs versus four to eight weeks on the general FAQ. Plan for the longer window. For a deeper look at thresholds, see MJE Passing Score 2026. No official pass rate has been verified, and earlier figures about numbers tested and later recognized are not matched pass/fail cohorts. MJE Pass Rate 2026 explains what can and cannot be said.
Prerequisites and Application Items
Eligibility is front-loaded. You need all of the following before the application is complete:
- Current CJE status.
- Current JEA membership.
- At least five years of journalism teaching or advising experience, documented by a resume.
- One recommendation or endorsement from a supervising principal or supervisor who has directly observed you, or from a current MJE who has worked with you.
- Three documented professional-growth activities, with at least one from each of the two published groups.
- An MJE project proposal.
- An integrity statement.
The professional-growth log must record dates, sponsoring organization, activity detail and impact on teaching effectiveness. Do not convert activity counts into CEU or CPE hours; the issuer uses activities, not an hour quota. No fixed experience-hour conversion or minimum training-hour total has been verified, and no separate MJE degree is required. The complete walkthrough is in MJE Requirements 2026.
Costs and Calendar Facts
| Item | Current figure or rule |
|---|---|
| On-site application/testing | USD 85 |
| Virtual testing | USD 110, including a USD 25 virtual proctoring component |
| Application fee refunds | Nonrefundable; payment required before scheduling |
| Membership dues | Separate expense; amount not added here |
| Application window | June 1-15 |
| First attempts | Summer or fall |
| Retakes | Spring |
| Project completion | By June 30 of the following year |
Because membership and CJE status are required, there is no separate nonmember testing tier. For the full pricing picture, including what to budget beyond testing, read MJE Certification Cost 2026, and for timing details see MJE Exam Dates 2026.
Retakes, Validity and Renewal
Retake rules (with the conflicts preserved)
- One first retake within one year of the original application carries no additional testing fee, though virtual proctoring may still cost USD 25.
- A candidate who meets the 75% overall criterion but misses the law-and-ethics criterion may retake that deficient section within the one-year period.
- The main and requirements pages state a USD 25 reapplication for retakes after one year, while the forms page requires a new application and the full fee after a second unsuccessful attempt. These conditions are not interchangeable, so do not assume a retake is always free or always USD 25.
- Scores are kept for two years, yet the test must still be taken within one year of application. Retention does not excuse the application deadline.
Validity and renewal
- The credential lasts five years while JEA membership remains active, expiring December 31 at term end.
- Renewal requires five documented professional-growth activities, at least two from each of Groups I and II, plus USD 10.
- Renewal is fee-free for retired members.
- A lapse longer than six months requires retesting.
- The MJE section grants retired advisers MJE Emeritus status after two renewals; the general retired-teacher FAQ still describes periodic renewal, so verify your situation with JEA.
Renewing your membership and renewing the credential are two separate obligations, so track both.
Project Quick Reference
The project is not part of the 2.5-hour exam timer, and it is assessed against its own six criteria, which are not added to the five written-exam areas.
Project scoring (current linked rubric)
Six criteria, each scored 0-3: Purpose, Support, Style and Organization, Communication, Reflection and Presentation.
- At least 12 points required.
- No more than one score of 1.
- Any score of 0 rejects the project.
Project content rules
- Acceptable formats include approved scholastic-journalism articles, research, textbooks or booklets, original teaching materials and documented projects serving the journalism-education community.
- Published-article submissions need at least 1,500 words total; routine news or interviews alone generally do not qualify.
- An original teaching unit must cover at least 10 days and include appropriate evaluation materials.
- Student work can document an outcome but cannot replace your own project work.
- Suitable projects completed within the preceding five years may be considered, with the required reflection and approval.
- Every project needs a reflection linking goals, planning, outcomes, impact and future usefulness to JEA standards.
- Notify the chair of any changes to an approved proposal. The stated proposal-response window is four weeks.
- Three committee members assess the project and the chair relays feedback.
On communication, the Excellent column mentions regular message-board participation and two online video meetings, while the Good column allows at least one video meeting. Attending only one meeting is therefore not automatically a failure.
Extension conflict: The forms page permits an additional year for USD 25 without reapplying. The main and requirements pages instead require reapplication and USD 25 within two years, then a full restart (retaking the exam and submitting a new proposal) after two years. Confirm which procedure applies before you rely on an extension.
A Domain-by-Week Prep Map
Since the intake reopens June 1, 2027, you have time to sequence your preparation around the exam's actual structure. This is the one section that touches general planning, so it stays tied to MJE specifics.
Legal and ethical issues first
- Because it is mandatory and separately scored, start here.
- Outline answers on prior review, censorship, privacy and the named cases.
Staff and administration relationships
- Draft a scenario response using your own advising history as evidence.
Content, writing and editing; Graphics, design and production
- Write one timed response for each and self-score against the 0-4 descriptors.
Business and advertising, then a full mock session
- Finish with four responses in a 2.5-hour block, including the law-and-ethics essay.
For a complete method and resource list, see the MJE Study Guide. If you want to build general exam stamina first, try the MJE practice test platform, and remember that its question format is a warm-up rather than a replica of JEA's essay prompts. You can also explore the broader main practice site for additional review material.
A word about outside "practice banks"
Marketplace listings and user-upload sites do carry items labeled for the MJE, but their provenance, alignment and quality are unverified, and at least one exact-title upload was reported with unrelated teacher-exam and subject content. Treat any such product as supplementary at best. Because the real exam asks for four applied essays, no multiple-choice bank can substitute for writing practice answers and having a colleague, ideally a current MJE, review them.
Career value, honestly stated
No MJE-holder salary series or measured pay premium has been verified. The only wage figure available is occupation-wide: the Bureau of Labor Statistics reports a median annual wage of USD 72,040 for high school teachers in May 2025, which is not journalism-only or MJE-specific pay. Evaluate your local salary schedule, reimbursement policies and responsibilities rather than expecting a guaranteed raise. MJE Salary Guide 2026 and Is the MJE Certification Worth It? walk through that analysis, and MJE Jobs covers where the credential tends to matter.
FAQ
You write four responses from five offered scenario prompts in one 2.5-hour session. The Legal and ethical issues response is mandatory.
You need at least 75% overall and, separately, at least 75% on the law-and-ethics response. Each response is scored 0-4 by independent judges, with fractional scores allowed.
No. The current application form states that intake is closed and will reopen June 1, 2027. The standard window is June 1-15, and the general forms page's October 15 deadline does not create a new MJE window.
On-site application and testing is USD 85. Virtual testing is USD 110, including a USD 25 proctoring component. Fees are nonrefundable and payable before scheduling, and JEA membership dues are separate.
CJE is the earlier credential and a prerequisite for MJE. MJE adds the five-scenario essay exam, a professional project, an online cohort and a five-year documented teaching or advising requirement. See the related pages on MJE certification for more detail.
